How can I bring my dog into a dog park when I'm scared of other dogs...?

which are going to be running around me as well?

Okay..I have a large German Shepherd....but I have feeling there will be dogs like Doberman, Rottweiler, Akita or Pitbulls around me running in the park...

what should I do?

In your case, I would recommend "No park activity for your dog. Other dogs will sense YOUR fear and that could make uneasy conditions for your dog. I don't recommend dogs running loose anyway. Too much liability, Keep your dog restrained and in pleaces where he can exercise without interaction with other dogs that stimulate your anxietyTheir sensing your anxiety could lead to "Pack attack" behavior.. Your dog needs interaction with you more than he needs interaction with other dogs that could cause problems, or even make your dog aggressive.

DO NOT bring your dog to a dog park if you are scared of other dogs. Your fear is going to be picked up on by the other dogs, and they are going to start acting out. And if your dog picks up on it, it may try to defend you, and the next thing you know there will be a dog fight. Which will be ALL your fault, no matter what the other dogs do.

If you are going to own a large, potentially dangerous dog, I sincerely suggest you start going to obedience classes, so that you learn how to project a calm attitude and be in charge. Some sessions with a trainer might also be helpful.

Yet you own the number one dog when it comes to bites.

The breeds you mention all have a wrongfully bad reputation.

Labs and goldens can attack a person just as well.

The biggest problem at dog parks is when people bring a dog who is aggressive to other dogs.

Do you know anyone with one of those breeds, so you can get to know their dog?

You would be surprised how many great examples of those breeds are out there...so many people have bad opinions of those dogs due to a few bad owners and the media.

You are extremely prejudice and even hypocritical. GSDs are considered "vicious dogs" by the media along with all those other breeds you mentioned. NONE of those breeds are bad. It's all hype by the media. Stop being so prejudice and just go to the park. Keep in mind that there is occasionally an untrained dog there and there might be a little quarrel.

You need to get over that fear

because most people are afraid of those breeds most people make sure they are friendly to people and most in dog parks are friendly towards other dogs.

They have all been given a bad rap. and with out a good reason. You need to go and meet people with these breeds of dogs and explain that you are afraid of this breed and would like to get over it. They will have no problem with that. Everyone who owns breeds with bad raps are more than willing to change someones view of their breed. Or find a breeder in your area that wouldn't mind you coming in and meeting their dogs which are well behaved.

Just remember your dog doesn't see dangerous breeds like rottweilers, akitas, pit bulls, dobermans, and others like you do, he sees someone to play with. So don't make him miss out on playing because of your fears.

I agree with the people who say, "stay away." If you are afraid of other dogs, the dog park is no place for you, and especially if you are with your dog. You might have to break up a dog fight, and you might not be able to do it. Some of the advice here on getting over this fear is also good, but until then, go elsewhere.

So what? Stop being afraid. Simple as that. Dogs CAN and DO detect fear. Why did you get a dog if you are afraid of dogs?

You are generalizing as well. You need to understand that 95% of all these dogs you mentioned are the biggest babies in the world. Stop believing everything you read and hear. German Shepherds have also been included in your list of dogs to fear, even though you didn't put it there. Other people would.

My Toy Poodle can send Pitties, Rotties, etc. running scared. So much for them being dogs to fear. There's even a fence between them, as it's segregated according to size.

We go to the dog park almost every day, and have for over 2 years and never had a problem.

wow that is soo "breed-ist"

nobody would bring an untrained dog to a dog park

so what if its a rottweiler or doberman or akita or pitbull

they are no different then any other dog , just bigger

they have a bad rep. because people look up a dog breed on google , read a few lines get a dog and dont know anything about the breed.

goldens and labs are on the top of the bite list. but yet you watch the news and hear of a few dogs and therefore think all are bad?! wow....

Dog Bites, Dog Fights, Disease's, wow it's just not a very good place for you or your dog really, your better off just staying out of Dog Parks. You know if everyone trained their dogs, properly vaccinated their dogs then dog parks would be cool, but people don't...so it's a risk for you and worse a really big risk for your dog.

you have a GSD, which is probably a perfectly nice dog, and there might be other dogs there, who are also probably perfectly nice too...

there's lots of people who are also afraid of GSD, so what's the problem?

no one should go to a leash-free dog park if their dog isn't nice!!!

if you're scared, don't go. your dog will sense that from you.

and WHAT is wrong with pit bull terriers???

What's wrong with those breeds?

There is nothing wrong with them. They aren't vicious. They are actually very affectionate breeds mislabeled by the media.

Plus, mean dogs aren't allowed in the dog park. So all the dogs there will be dog friendly.

Good luck.

HOw can you be scared of those smaller dogs when you have a large german shepherd, If you are really afraid dont take the dog to the park. If you really want to tkae him, just sit on the bench and ignore the other dogs and watch you dog play!

Come on, to be a dog owner you'll have to be bolder. That's the way the park is! I think tou can't have a dog if you're that coward to other big dogs running at the park. Even It's possible if those big dogs are gentle.

I apologize if you think I'm rude.

i wouldn't go to dog parks period. they are not always nice dogs around. it is also easy to spread diseases. i would just walk my dog and if i wanted her to socialize set up doggy play dates in a more secure and controlled setting

Wow.

Um basically get over it. Id be terrified of your dog if i owned a chihuahua.

All those breeds you mentioned are living proof that the media has convinced you they are bad.

Take your dog through an obedience course first. You'll become more comfortable being near other dogs and you'll learn to trust your dog in a group setting. Then try a dog park.

If your scared of dogs then why do you own one ?

How can u be scared of other dogs- come on !

well just go when there aren't many dogs there
