Considering the dam, the stud, and their dams and studs were probably never temperament tested [evident from the fact that you're asking this question] -- then yes, she probably will be "aggressive" to both dogs AND humans in the household.

Consequences of irresponsibly breeding untested pet-quality dogs.

It could go either way. HOWEVER, please have your ****** whelp in a completely separate part of the house to your other pets - and ideally she should be taken out to do her pooh and pees away from where they are going, particularly if they are being exercised off the property. She could well bring infection into the litter on her feet - and for sure, if you allow other animals near her while the puppies are still nursing they will be at serious risk of picking up an infection. I know first hand of a litter that went down with Kennel Cough within days of being born - 3 of the 9 puppies died. And all because the novice owner thought it would be fine for the other dogs in her household to be close to the litter. And had had one at a show immediately before they were born!!!

New mums need to feel safe and not be put in a position of defending their pups in any case. And if she feels at all threatened, she could well turn on her puppies, never mind attacking the other dogs. This isn't a happy families thing. It's a dam producing a litter of puppies.

Once the puppies are well on their way to being weaned, and mum is away from them for the most part, you can allow the other household pets to see the puppies. They will probably just look, sniff, and go about their normal business.

Add - TD - oh perlease!!! Why do I bother. Seriously.

Maybe. She may become aggressive towards the other dogs. Are there other females in the house? Maternity can cause a shift in the pecking order and aggression may be seen.

Her whelping box should be away from the other dogs. They shouldn't even be able to see her from a distance. Put her whelping box in a room and put a baby gate across the doorway. The pups are in danger from the other dogs. I've seen a three-day old pup degloved (the skin was peeled off his back) in seconds. The new, inexperienced, breeder left a door open for less than half a minute and another female came in very quietly and grabbed a pup.

You may want to crate the others and take the new mother out to potty on a leash for the first days. She'll have a discharge that you may not want dripped everywhere.

You MUST give your ***** a super-safe place to have and then nurse her puppies for the first 5-6 weeks. The best solution I've ever seen is a kennel-grade 5'x5'x5' metal pen with a kiddie wading pool inside, that's been swaddled with cheap towels (mostly for the the *****'s comfort). This particular set-up was in a garage but you could also do this in a dry and warm basement.

Make sure to let momma out to do her business a few times a day (and as a break from the needy pups). But do not pick up or fondle the pups for the first few weeks. (Forget that whole "home-raised and handled" stuff - leave the puppies alone for the first few weeks, and just let momma handle them. Don't pick them up until the 4th week.)

Do not adopt out or give away or sell any of the pups before they're at least 8 weeks old -- puppies need that full 8 weeks for crucial socialization lessons (like bite inhibition) from both mom and siblings.

Then, get mom SPAYED. Please.

Best of luck and good wishes with your momma dog and her current batch of puppies.

But please, I beg you, don't do this again. The world has too many unwanted dogs already, please don't contribute again to the overpopulation. Leave the breeding to people who know what they're doing. I'm sorry if that sounded bitchy. But just check my "Source" and you'll understand.

Some will only be aggressive if other dogs come near the pups.Others are moody and do not want any dogs near them for a while. The idea on temperament testing would have answered this is silly .Temperament testing can not take into account how the dog feels after giving birth. Also the one who suggested not handling the pups at all until 4 weeks of age is wrong in my opinion. They should be handled daily to check them over. I do not mean excessively but pick up gently and check over. This helps with human/dog socialization.I have a lot more to say but have to go to work.I'll post more later.Added; I'm back. Not surprised of the TDs.Anyway I do let my other dogs check over new pups if mom is not around and I'm surpervising. Not every dog is out to kill another dog's pups.Mine usually sniff them and leave them be.All a part of socialization.I would not suggest contact with your other dogs if they have been out and about and being exposed to who knows what .

If you got your dog spayed you wouldn't be wondering now would you?

You have no dam business breeding because you don't have a clue.

With all the dogs being killed in shelters because there are no homes for them you have the audacity to bring in yet another litter.

Shame on you, Shame on you.

yes she could become aggressive to other dogs in the household, even if they are not near the litter. It happens with some dogs.I always keep mom and litter in a spare bedroom until pups are 4 weeks old, then I move them out to a crate in my kitchen for socializing.Do you know about whelping? If not go to dogbreedinfo.com , look to the right side of home page there is a list with lots of info there.

i guess it depends what her temperament is like. if you have another dog let it in the room where she is (have it on a lead) and see if she reacts. if she growls take the dog away, if she ignores the dog maybe let it see the pups but be careful

No, you shouldn't let another dog near her, nor her pups. Please give your breed mentor a phone call. He/she will be more than happy to answer all of your questions. You do have one, right?

What is up with all the BYB's lately?

Yes she will become more aggressive if anyone even looks her way.Move her to a quiet spot in the house where other dogs are not in her territory at all.A dam could literally kill another dog just for trying to sneak a peek at her babies.

You should of read up on this before you let your dog have puppies. Keep other dogs away from mom & puppies in fact you should of had her whelping box in a safe and secure place so the other dogs couldn't bother her

Other dogs often kill pups - it will be the mother dog's job to keep them away -=== this is not aggression, this is protecting her young.

I see another dimwit byb has joined the ranks.

She will only be agressive to the other dogs if the other dogs are near here pups and you be carefull too she may turn on you too if you don't handle her pups right or if you spook her

Here's a thumbs up for MamaBas. She is right. And you have a right to have a serious answer to your question.

Should only be when they get near her pups. The aggressiveness is just her protecting her children.

You can't tell. It's best to keep her separated from the other pets until the pups have gone to their new homes.

she will only be aggressive if the other dogs get too close to her puppies or the whelping box....make sure you put it in a nice quiet spot, where the other dogs won't go.

Another BYB wonderful keep any other dogs away from your dog and her puppies do not let them near her or her pups

Ask your breeding mentor with the kennel club with which you are registered.

Every dog is different. You will know when the time comes. Do what you have to to keep mom and the puppies happy and safe. Lee

my dog is a wimp.he is scared of kitten...how can i make him less wimpish

smart dog the kitten can do real damage to his eyes with those sharp claws!

your dog isnt a wimp he is cautious, introduce him to new things slowing and reasure him he is ok. he will do fine.

Put him on a leash and make him stand near whatever scares him. He will freak out for a little but will warm up to what hes scared of. Once he calms down let him off the leash and he will be good.

Dogs are NOT wimps :OOOOO.

He's just not used to the kitten; I bet. I know he was afraid of you when you first bought him home.

you don't. it's not wimpy. it's probably just a little scared. has the dog ever met a cat before?

how old is he? that wouk=ld be a factor and what breed if its a chihuahua ure screwed

lay off the beano, give her two tablespoons of plain non fat yogurt. it will stop the gas.

I give my dog activated charcoal biscuits

http://www.ferskitreats.com/products.html

my dog shits out his mouth should i give him beano !!?

NO.

and my dog is a horse so it really doesnt matter .

(:

I've been trying to breed my dog, how long until it lays eggs?

You have to wait until Mars aligns with the Crab Nebula on the fifth Tuesday in February, then go outside wearing nothing but a monocle with a cup of applesauce on your head and crow three times. That's when your dog will lay its eggs.

lol http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20090805172338AA8tonA&kid=LppVGmbhLGiB3Wr1gg_7&s=comm&date=2009-08-25+06%3A07%3A58&.crumb=

She'll lay them three days after the magical faerie comes and clicks the heels of her sparkly blue shoes together four times.

You have to dig thorugh her poop and if you dont see them keep doing it. If you dont find any eat it. They should come in about a week

The 2nd Tuesday of each week your dog will lay eggs.

YEAH..

in about a week...

dont worry ill come soon.

Most probably, Easter.

In the meantime, it's best to keep that duck away from her.

really?? if you mean starts menstruation, it depends on the breed and the dog... dogs don't lay eggs

Well unless your dog is part chicken, shell never lay eggs

sorry to break it to ya.. but dogs don't "lay eggs" they give birth!

i'm very confused with your question.

ummm.. dude, dogs don't lay eggs. I seriously hope this is a joke. *rolls eyes*

I can't put my inside and no mater what m dog can see my bunny

which is older?

im assuming your dog, because if you had your dog for a long time, and your dog is used to all the attention, then getting another pet is a big surprise to it.

of course your dog will be jealous, wouldn't you be if you were in the dog's position?

Now what you should do is split up the time between them. Give half your attention to your bunny, and half to your dog.

If your dog and bunny could be together, the jealousy will ware off

really soon.

but, if they can not, then surely they will be able to cooperate after a couple of days.

If not, after a two weeks your dog is still very jealous of your bunny, then him/her to a behaviorist or trainer.

If the behaviorist/trainer still couldn't make the dog acceptable to living with another creature, then i am afraid you will have to give one of them up.

But heres another idea, adopt another dog, similar to your dogs age and behavior, so your dog will have a friend to play with, and will not be lonely or jealous if you give attention to your bunny.

(or you could foster it, like a tryout for a couple of months to see if this idea works)

Hope Your Dog Will Not Be Jealous of Your Bunny Anymore! ;)

Good Luck! :D

what do i do? will he be okay ? :(

He will probably be ok but keep a close eye on him.

The only worry is the cooked bones.

How did a 13yo large dog get up on the table and where were you while he was doing all this? I guess you won't leave food on the table again.

The only thing I would be worried about is the chicken bones splintering and getting stuck in his throat or stomach. He may throw up the food because it upset his stomach or he may have the runs but if he acts lethargic, won't eat or drink I would take him to an emergency vet immediately. If he throws up or gets the runs it is safe to give him a tablespoon of Pepto Bismo.

Regardless of any other answers, It doesn't make any difference if the chicken bones are cooked or raw. Chicken bones are the worst things to let your dog eat. I used to feed my GSD raw chicken wings until I found one in her faeces (poo) that had splintered. The bone sliver was about 2 inches long. The danger was very obvious. The feeding of chicken bones in any (whole) form is deadly. It was only because the stomach acids had rounded off the sharp points that my GSD did not suffer a pierced stomach, intestine or bowel. If this should happen, your dog will die an excruciating painful death before you realize what has happened.

Following the detection of the bone splinter, I now feed my GSD finely minced/ground chicken necks. Even these chicken necks (or turkey necks) must never be fed as whole necks. I have seen dogs choke on the individual vertebrae. This does not happen when the necks are ground. I perform a regular check/examination of my dogs faeces to make sure she is "normal" and healthy. OK, this sounds gross, but how much is your dogs' life and love for you worth? At the same time, it is quite surprising what you find and you can determine what to do to keep your beloved best mate in perfect health.

Don't worry about the extra fat in the fries. A dog needs at least 10% or more of fat in his diet. I would be more concerned about the potato but if he doesn't/hasn't thrown up he will be ok. If he does throw up, he will need a drink of water to replace the lost body fluids

Wedge

Lucky him. But he will probably be okay. The only problem is that the chicken bones might splinter and get stuck in his throat. But the chicken meat and the fries shouldn't be much of a problem. He might throw up, which is okay. Also he will likely have diarrhea for a few days. But if he gets through the first hour okay, then he will be just fine =]

im not actually a vet here sooo my advce isnt the best to be getting it 4rm ...anyway, a dog shouldnt consum that much fat *(like our food) simply because itz not good 4 them and its hard 4rm them 2 digest...sooo my best advice is to just tell ur vet n see what his (or) her advice is..after all they know what their talking about...itz their job

o and i hope ur dog gets better =D

the only thing I would be worried about is the bones..chicken bones can splinter and get stuck in the throat, stomach, intestines....just watch your dog carefully. If he starts to act funny take him to the vet.

umm well i dont think that its like bad for them or poisoness, but if he throws up, eats grass, or has something wrong with his poo, then there might be something wrong. just wait and see how he takes it.

He should be OK if he didn't get a bone stuck in his throat. He will probably get the runs. And sometimes dogs throw up potatoes.

I wish I was a little bit taller I wish I was a baller I wish I had a girl in the pent I would call her

dogs have easy regurgitation. They eat a lot of stuff they arent supposed to. if he wasn't ok he would throw it up.

My friends and I ( all 14 and 15) are setting up a buisness over the summer holz for dogs. Basically a big dog walking/washing thing trying to raise some money. Has anyone got a good name for our buisness or any tips on how to do it? Thanks so much x

Also should we are going to donate some money to the RSPCA (our animal charity) and we are wondering if we should say that and how much we should donate out of our profit. XXX

Donate half to the charity

How about ~Caring for Canines~ I would donate %15 which is a nice gesture.

its been 6 day since my i took my dog to breed at the fifth day her vulva started to swell and today i notice she was bleeding is that normal

Your breeding mentor didn't tell you this basic fact?

ETA: Good excuse!!

If your dad REALLY bred Labs -- you would either already know these simple **basic** facts, or he would have STAYED home.

Note: "***i*** took ***my*** dog to breed"

Four to five weeks into pregnancy, a clear mucus vaginal discharge may be noticed. One week before the labor, in the female dog as well as in the female cat, the body temperature (measured in the rectum) decreases 1º up to establish between 98ºF and 100ºF, she starts to have milk, its vulva usually gets edematous and with a slight vaginal leak; she can have a change of behavior such as a search of a dark and remote place, an increase worry and the construction of the nest.

Ok when did your dog go into heat? you may have taken her too soon, because the bleeding usually lightens and then the vulva looks soft and puffy. Dogs are usually ready to breed about 2 weeks after they start showing signs of heat. 10 to 14 days. When she is ready she will hold her tail to the side and sometimes lift her vulva. Thats when she is ready to mate.

I'm not going to attack you for breeding, just make sure you have homes in advance of any puppys you may get.

Since you don't know the answer to this question you should NOT be breeding. You don't have a friggin clue.

With all the dogs being killed in shelters because there are no homes for them you are bringing in yet another litter of dogs. UGH!!

Do your poor dog a favor and get her spayed after she has weaned her pups.

Stop being the BYB that you are.

The vulva will swell during a heat cycle, and may stay larger than before. They don't usually bleed after the first week or so of the heat so that's odd.

lemme tell you something embarrassing. (btw, awesome name, I think I'll have another) Having a dog in the room is all good until he gets curious and you feel that wet nose where the sun don't shine...(boxers have really short snouts so he was really "into it")

no, he would be just an observer

he would have to physically participate to be considered playing with 3.

hahahhahahhahahhaahahhahahahahhahahah, so funny.

probally.

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090806000303AA6G1TM

Reported . Sicko !

Not unless he participates...

NO haha

unless the dog got a bit more involved then just watching....

EWWWWW

it would be beastility by proxy....

if it joined in.. then yea

If thats what you want to call it. Your wife is a lucky lady.

no, you'd have to let the dog bring a friend.

Lmao!! Sure...but if you brag to your buddies, leave out the fact that your 3rd was a dog

only if your dog joins in, what's the zero in l0ve?

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NO - you would be "barking up the wrong tree" with that idea !!

Nope.

Maybe.

umm... no.

-.~

if so then i've had many 3somes.

ur a nasty crazy freak that needs to get some help

Shave and wax the dog then wash in boiling hot water.

1st take him outside...2nd leave him out there...3rd don't let him back in...he will eventually find a new home and they can fix the problem!

I suggest you take him to the vet as soon as you can! :)

xoxo alisha

Is it coming out of his butt or out of his mouth? Stick a peppermint in both ends and see if that helps.

Is it mutating into a better smelling fart??

Oxiclean.

Take him to the vet if he's that bad.

My german sherperd dog is already 10 months old. She is still very shy with other dogs. Even a very small size dog can chase her. If other dogs approach her aggresively, she submited immediately. I would like her to play with other dogs happily with confidence. Most dogs she met in off-leash park were very nice(not as aggressive as she thought). Please give me some tips on how to train her to be confident like a gsd should be.

Unfortunately, while GSDs are *supposed* to be confident, many are not. Many in the US are products of back yard breeders and because of this they are prone to improper temperament. Also, at ten months old, she is still very much a baby. You wouldn't expect a toddler to stand up to a bullying teenager no matter how small or dorky that teenager was. It is your job to get in there when other dogs approach her aggressively and get her out of the situation/prevent the other dog from approaching. As someone else mentioned, I would rather have a dog that submits to even the smallest dog than one that is fearful or aggressive to them...especially a breed like the GSD with it's dubious public relations/reputation.

As for increasing confidence, you stepping in and ending the situation when you feel that she is becoming overwhelmed will go a long way. After all, everyone's braver when they know someone's got their back if they should run into trouble. Also, basic obedience will do wonders for a dog's self confidence...especially if you use positive training methods. As she learns what you are asking/expecting of her she will become more confidant as she realizes that she knows what it is you want. GSD's are frequently happy to please their owners and if she knows she's making you happy then she will be more confidant in her abilities.

it all depends on personality. sterotypeing dogs isnt good. thats like saying "all pitbulls are aggressive and mean" http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20070818193126AAhhfxb&kid=TbMmC0DOUG7Wlsasf9HC&s=comm&date=2008-08-01+21%3A36%3A28&.crumb=

I agree whole-heartedly with ainawgsd. Obedience training will increase her socialization, and help her fully realize that as her "pack leader" your job is to protect her. Be careful though, because fearful dogs can eventually become fearful/agressive dogs. Obedience training is the first step. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20070818193126AAhhfxb&kid=EIFtH1HVN0.o69YkeZch&s=comm&date=2009-07-29+21%3A09%3A59&.crumb=

hmm, try to get her a play mate about her size. or get a friends dog. it is ok for your dog to be shy, just not with every dog. the best option is either you go out and play with her yourself, or get another dog her age.

Obedience classes will help it will empower both you and her and give her confidence not only in herself - but in you as her owner.

I want to tell you - please enjoy this. As the owner of a dog that is now very defensive around other dogs, this is something that need not be changed. As she gets older, and with support from you, her confidence will naturally increase. But enjoy the fact that you don't have a frenzied dog barking their head off because they are scared of everyone else!

Not all German Shepherds are confident dogs, it's that way for all breeds. Individual dogs are a product of their genes and upbringing.

For your pup to build up some confidence, your best bet is to take her to a basic obedience class where she'll have a chance to interact with other dogs in a controlled setting. the instructor should be able to help you to help her!

German Shepherds are extremely intelligent dogs, and learning commands etc. will help her to gain some confidence.

She needs to learn that strange dogs, people, places and objects are not necessarily scary - this is called socialization. It's not necessarily a quick process, but it's really important if you want her to grow into a confident, friendly dog.

You'll need to take her lots of places and introduce her to lots of different things, but you'll need to take it slowly and be patient. If she's a naturally timid dog, it will make matters worse if you rush her as she'll get scared.

There's a good article on socialization at the link below. It gives you ideas on how and where to socialize your pup.

Good luck

Take her for obedience classes, that will help her to get socialized with other dogs and people.

She may just have a submissive nature and not be alpha, but you can shore up her self esteem by the right training.

My baby LOVES dogs. She says "dog" at least 5 or 6 times a day and we don't even have a dog. So, for her 1st birthday (in about 2 months) its gonna be a Dog Day ;-D. Please don't say she won't remember, because I'd have to beg to differ. I remember my 1st birthday and her Dad has early memories, too.

Besided Clifford the Big Red Dog and real dogs, the pet store, etc., what are some other dog themed things? Ideas?

I found these party packs at Oriental Trading Company's website.

My personal favorite is the first link. You have a choice of what size party pack to buy.

Good Luck! My son will be turning 1 on October 11th, and I am also starting to plan!

Pluto (was he a dog)?

Dalmations!!! That would be perfect for a baby's first birthday!!!!! Black and white decorations, etc.

Who cares if the baby remembers the birthday or not. Its a special day and you can celebrate however big you want!!!

For the invitations, make them into the shape of dog bones. Or shaped like a dogs paw.

For decorations, add construction paper ears and a face drawn on with permanent marker to balloons to make them look like dogs

For the cake, make a round cake and 4 cupcakes to look like a dogs paw

For goodie bags, get a bunch of brown paper bags and constructions paper. Before the party cut out eyes, noses, mouths and ears out of the paper for the kids to make their own "doggy bags"

For centerpieces or party favors, make bowls of puppy chow, here is a recipe

Puppy Chow Recipe

1 Cup Chocolate Chips

8 Cups Chex Cereal

1 Cup Peanut Butter

4 Cups Powdered Sugar

1 Cube Butter or Margarine

Melt butter, chocolate chips, and peanut butter together. Pour over Chex cereal. Put mixture in paper bag, add powdered sugar and shake until covered. Delicious!

For games, have the kids bring their favorite stuffed dog or picture of a dog to have a dog show or play pin the tail on the dog

Here is a link to lots more ideas, hope these help... http://holidays.kaboose.com/dog.html

There are

Snoopy!!!!! He is so cute!

Party express has the ones that have the big face, kind of like the extreme close up, they are really stinkin cute. I bought some stuff from them for my little ones first b-day. they also have this plate that is like a guest book, with a permanent pen with it and the guests sign it and then she will always have who came to her party, it was a big hit. let me double ck on the address for them nope i was wrong. birthdayexpress.com. Enjoy!!!!

My sons love Raggs,B Max,Trilby,Razzles and Pido, and Wags the dog off the wiggles.

courage the cowardly dog lol or something like ummm cat& dog but thats relle old

I live with my parents and my dad is talking about gettting a dog. We have 2 cats- one is almost 14 and the other one is 7 years old. Dad's cat passed away in February of this year and he's been talking about getting a dog ever since. Dad talks about getting a Lab or a border collie, but I don't think either one of those dog breeds would be the most compatible with our 2 cats. Mom's 7 year old cat is very territorial of the back porch and attacks any animal that comes on or near it and my 14 year old cat runs whenever an animal comes in the house. Mom's alllergic to dog hair, so we can't have a longhaired breed dog. What kind of dog gets along well with cats, because Dad's starting to get serious about getting a dog?

I think you are absolutely right! Border Collies are high-intensity, high-drive working dogs. They require a LOT of exercise, and preferably a job to do or they can be insane to live with. We're talking at least two thirty minute STRENUOUS runs every day, not a casual 3 mph walk around the block. Many Border Collies end up in the pound because people can't deal with their herding instincts, car chasing and odd behavior (like guarding pots and pans!)

Labs can be very powerful and playful, and could easily hurt a cat without even meaning to. Plus they shed terribly and aren't good for people with allergies. I'm surprised your mom could tolerate cats if she really is allergic to dog hair - usually it's the other way around. Your mom should spend at least a few hours at the breeder's home to see if it bothers her.

With cats, you definitely shouldn't get a terrier!

I'd suggest going with an English Cocker Spaniel (NOT the American Cocker!) or an English Springer Spaniel or a Welsh Springer Spaniel or a Portugese Water dog or a Curly Coated Retriever or an Irish Water Spaniel. (Maybe even a Havanese or a Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen - but I don't know any personally. You'd have to go to dog shows and check them out.) These are somewhat rare breeds - check out www.ack.org for breeders. The PWD, CCR and IWS look a bit like Standard poodles, but they're not as high energy. They're easy to train and don't shed much at all. The IWS and the PWD tend to be on the shy side, so make sure you get her out and socialize her while she's young. And because they don't shed, they're going to need more grooming than the average dog.

BEFORE you get a puppy, I'd also suggest reading some really good books on training. Try not to do it randomly - there are a lot of bad books out there also! These are some of my favorites:

What All Good Dogs Should Know - Volhard

Good Owners, Great Dogs - Brian Kilcommins

Dog Tricks : Eighty-Eight Challenging Activities for Your Dog from World-Class Trainers by Haggerty and Benjamin

Don't Shoot the Dog - Pryor

Training Your Dog: The Step by Step Method - Volhard

Dog Problems - Benjamin

Cesar's Way - Cesar Millan

Also, watch the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel. Cesar Millan is the best trainer I've ever seen on TV.

I think that you need to think very carefully about getting a dog. Think about how much you can do and cope with. In 10 years time what will happen to the dog. How much time and care can you provife it. Border Collie are very lovely dogs, but they need a lot of work, a lot of exercise & stimulation http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20060614085517AAgPINu&kid=Tb5yXWrOUjUSaBAKFL2C&s=comm&date=2008-12-14+06%3A06%3A17&.crumb=

I would get a Border collie i have one now and he is very playful, cuddly and he thinks hes a lap dog! He is so cute and i would recommend a border collie or Australian shepherd to anyone with kids! http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20060614085517AAgPINu&kid=BqVWI2bZOWezWytZJ1yy&s=comm&date=2009-06-04+14%3A28%3A18&.crumb=

the cats are going to have a hard time with any breed but they will get use to a dog with lots of love

Labs don't mature until they are about 3 yrs. old. I have a black lab and she is hyper 24-7. She is almost 1 1/2. They are ball crazy, but are very loving. It can get annoying when they get all up in your face for attention(leterally). Their tails are long and wag furiously(knocks things off of low tables and such, and hurts a little when it hits you). If you get a lab, get and older one that won't bother the cats when it's not spending time playing ball with you.

My ex-girlfriend had Shitzus. They don't shed, but they are tiny. I thought they were cool.

Yorkshire terriers are cool.

I do agree that you should visit a local shelter and see if there is something there to suit your needs. The people there can help guide you to a dog that will fit your lifestyle. That's what they do, and they are pretty good at it.

I will say, however, that if you are specifically looking for a pure-bred, that your mom would appreciate a smaller, shorter-haired dog that doesn't have a regular shedding season. You're going to laugh, but Chihuahuas and Boston terriers can both be wonderful family dogs, as well as many other small breeds. And yes, they learn to love cats if raised with them. I'm not sure of the shedding habits of other small breeds, but I know there are others. Look for breeds that do not have long or even medium-length hair. And read carefully about the breed, and especially the breeder, before you bring one home. (You could always go with a hairless breed as well... )

Good luck to you, and I hope you find what you are looking for!

hi,i have 3 cats, they are 1 2 and 4, but i have border collie mix dog,*****,and a miniture pinscher male.he pesters the cats he dont mean too he just wants too play but wiv him being of possesive nature he sometimes growls at them,

my collie mix shes great wiv cats she dont bother them.

see my cats have been brought up wiv dogs from day 1.

so its realy ur parents decision,if they think ur cats will adjust, cats r usually cool, once ajusted to dogs.when they know thier part off household.

bye hope u can make mind up,and have many happy yrs wiv whatever u choose.

get a Labrador, they love all people especially little kids. They are loyal, super smart, & easy to train. I wouldn't have anything else

A Chihauhau or get a dog and shave it.

Lab's are the best

if your mom is allergic to dog hair u might want to get a poodle since they dont shed. as far as that goes. if you have a cat that will stand up to a dog then any dog will do. cuz we had a cat that would play with the dogs and just stand there if they started messing with him. somethin happened to that cat and we had to give that dog away but we got a new cat that was real skittish and we got a new dog too and that cat will run from the dog so the dog will chase it . the skittish cat had kittens and the dog killed one oof them. so really the cats just have to stand up to the dog.

A lab would be OK,get it as a baby so all will adjust living together happily in the house,A border collie is a nice dog but they really need to be kept busy they are herding dogs with a very strong drive so if you don't have the time and energy to work with these dogs it could be disastrous in the home, look on AKC.org there you will info. on all the breeds and you can decide which will be more suitable to your family.

Blue Picardy Spaniel

Whatever you do DO NOT GET A BORDER COLLIE. Don't get me wrong, they are phenomenal dogs, but they are serious working dogs with an incredible herding instinct. They will make your resident cats miserable! They can nip as well (again, it's part of the herding instinct) and are no good with children. They are also so intelligent, they get bored easily and constantly need a job (or they will destroy your home). A Labrador Retriever is an all around wonderful breed. They make fantastic family dogs, have great temperaments and are known for doing fine with people, other dogs and cats. If your mom is allergic to dogs, however, hair length is really irrelevant. All dogs shed and most people are not allergic to the hair, they're allergic to the dander and the saliva. If you want a hypo-allergenic dog, get a poodle. Poodles don't have fur they have hair and are great for folks with allergies. They're smart dogs too and come in 3 sizes...toy, minature & standard. Good luck
.

Personally, I think a Golden Retriever is the best dog. Just make sure that whatever dog you choose you give it proper training. You can read more about dog training and dog training books at http://luv-pets.com/pest/pets/dog-training-books.html . Hope it helps.

Any type of Lab

A good site to find a pet is petfinder.com. They have list of animal shelters and pets available. I got my dog that way.

http://www.petfinder.com

Any dog would be fine, as long as you train them as puppies.

SHEPARD, LABADOR,OR ANY SMALL BREED DOG

A puppy or a shelter dog that has been screened. If you go with a new puppy make sure that whatever breed it is (or dominant breed if a mixed dog) doesn't have a high prey drive. Remember if the cats run that the dog will chase. If the cats stand their ground and swat the pup in the nose, the pup will learn to respect the cats' space. Also training, training, training and lots of socialization for any pup. They need to be good members of society.

It still depends on other aspects of your lives. How many are willing to take the dog for LONG walks in ALL weather??? Do you like being active with the dog. Do you have a fenced in yard??

There are things other than cats that are the factors on which breed you should get. Make a list of your favorite breeds and research them to see what they require. The most common reason a dog doesn't work out is that people have unrealistic expectations of the dog and the dog then has to go. Do some research and you will find a breed that fits what you are looking for!!!!! Remember....even many shorthaired dogs can cause allergies to flare. It isn't the hair, it is the dander and even in a litter, there will be pups with more dander than others.

depend of what you family like is like do to

go to dogfancy.com and the will have servey you can take and that will give you some idea about what kind of dog you want

unequivocally--a pit bull! before you count them out, consider this: i own two. they are great with cats, as well as other small animals and children. don't believe the stories you may have heard. our female nursed our cat when he was a kitten, though she had never had pups of her own. as long as you start with a pup and socialize it--that means getting it around as many people and other animals as you can--you will end up with a fantastic companion and protector. someone already pointed out that it's the dander, not the fur that sparks allergies. i have a severe allergy to dog dander, yet my pit bulls hardly ever bother my allergies. not to mention they hardly shed at all and don't require much in the way of grooming. a lot of people have suggested labs, but they have a tendency to get overweight without a lot or exercise and hip displaysia is a common malady to the breed. pit bulls have no inherent health problems and are one of the smartest dog breeds out there.
they were bred specifically to be companions to people. and anyway, could you really take a dog seriously if it was called a "goldie-poo"? for god's sake! that's ridiculous. if you want a good dog, you can't go wrong with a pit bull.

Get a poodle if anyone is allergic to dog fur because poodles hair never falls out; and there is nothing to be allergic too. A poodle pup would get along with cats, and probably want to play but would not ihurt a cat.

If Mom is alergic to dog hair then do not get a dog. Short hair means just that Short! Its still there you just dont see it so easily.

So for the sake of Mom's heath you might want to let this idea go.

A Boxer would likely be the ideal addition to your family. Sweet, loving, good with kids, ok with cats and very loyal. Good luck.

poodles are good for allergic people because they don't shed. but most dogs don't like cats and most cats don't like dogs. Good Luck

Your local humance society will have dogs up for adoption. They "test" dogs to see how they interact with children, other pets, ect... They will be able to help you find a dog that is good with cats. The biggest question is will your cat adjust to the dog. Bichon Frise (sp?) are good for people with allergies.

any type of dog as long as it is a pup but i wouldn't get to large of a breed it might play to ruff when it gets big you might worry about your cat adapting to the dog tho

The best thing to do is go to your local animal shelter or animal control facility. If you can, try to find one that collects information on pets that are turned in by their owners. That way, you can find a dog that may have already lived with cats. There are so many animals in shelters all over the world that need loving homes - go save one! I used to work in a shelter and I can tell you there is a different dog for every need, I know you will find one that will fit in with your family life. I got my dog from the shelter I used to work at and he's the best dog I've ever had.

Jack Russell Terrier

I walk my dog alot. And hes a big dog. And hes good on a leash. I can handle him really good. But i get scared when he sees another dog. He doesnt bark at all. But the other dogs bark at him. Making my dog run. He rips the leash out of my hands and runs toward the dogs. But he never hurts the dogs. But the dogs always hurt him. How do i control him so me and my dog dont get hurt?

First off, get a air compreser thing like a blow horn with out the horn. spray it in his face. eventually, he won't chase them because he knows he will get punished. Hope this helped. Use a retractable leash. That way you can control him and it is plastic so it won't rip out of your hands as much.

jeff g isnt quite correct if u turn the other way your dog will never get used to being with other dogs especially if u want another dog http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20080701152949AAU4Ky5&kid=IoEtPk3ZNHJ4DTLNXhMv&s=comm&date=2008-07-22+16%3A01%3A28&.crumb=

scaring/punishing your dog for being scared won't work!use treats/toys to distract your dog as he walks past other dogs and eventually he will be able to walk right next to them and not even notice.use a favorite toy just for that.he will associate other dogs with treats/toy http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20080701152949AAU4Ky5&kid=R6V_JVfHMm89t.iKY0MU&s=comm&date=2008-08-11+17%3A07%3A17&.crumb=

This suggestion is a good way to teach your dog that other dogs are scary and make him dog aggressive. Instead, you should have him sit and do tricks to distract him when other dogs come around and give him treats and tell him how good he is. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20080701152949AAU4Ky5&kid=NbUvWDK4UjW.J2kGsUZY&s=comm&date=2008-11-17+12%3A50%3A04&.crumb=

The answer chosen as the "best answer" is the WORST answer. What you are doing is making him fearful and aggressive to other dogs by negative association. Please, don't take training advice from people who are not professionals. I am a canine behaviorist. DO NOT DO THAT ANSWER! http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20080701152949AAU4Ky5&kid=IZ1pGHfUFGsuOnYfszBZ&s=comm&date=2008-12-02+07%3A31%3A03&.crumb=

If people have questions about training please pick up a book or call a dog trainer. The answers I see on yahoo about dog behavior are scaring me. Usually the best answer is buried and the one picked as "best" is the worst thing you could do. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20080701152949AAU4Ky5&kid=IZ1pGHfUFGsuOnYfszBZ&s=comm&date=2008-12-02+07%3A33%3A51&.crumb=

If you want your dog to exercise control when he sees other dogs, it would be a good idea to give him something else to do. Try taking him to the park and working on some familiar command...like sit...over and over again, letting dogs pass by you. As he calms down over time, let him meet the dogs. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20080701152949AAU4Ky5&kid=IL1yEm3vDVjGGX794kBK&s=comm&date=2009-01-22+21%3A58%3A37&.crumb=

get the hose wet them untill they leave http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20080701152949AAU4Ky5&kid=RsJkDUW7JU9DmtxJTc7c&s=comm&date=2009-02-05+07%3A13%3A29&.crumb=

Best answer is DEF the worst. Do that and your sweet playful puppy will turn into a monster. Most pet stores have some great training books, and look up Ceaser Milan! He's amazing. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20080701152949AAU4Ky5&kid=EIFtH1HVN0.o69YkeZch&s=comm&date=2009-07-29+21%3A05%3A26&.crumb=

I remember a dog training programme i watched on TV some time ago ... and all the trainer did on it was when they approached another dog coming along they turned around and walked the other way a bit, and then turned back around and continued walking the other way as before.

The dog didn't react a bit as he/she had already seen the other dog approaching ......... they did give a fill explination as to why the dog didn't react after this but i don't remember it.

Seems like a more simpler method then previous mentioned and won't hurt to give ago.

You need to look into training classes if it is getting bad enough that he is getting hurt often. But in the mean time, you need to have a handle on the leash, or wrap it around your hand and keep a firm grip on the leash. If you can't control him and he is too big for you, then get someone else to walk him until you can train with him.

My dog used to do the same thing, and after much work w/ a trainer- he is totally cured... here's what he taught me-

We went through training sessions for a few minutes- a couple times a day where we practiced 'heal' commands. This included using a distraction (a friend's dog etc.) and keeping my dog walking in time w/ me without even letting him react to the distraction. The leash was kept very short and next to my leg so that as I walked or stopped- so did my dog. Every time he looked or tried to pull away, I would command 'heal' and pull him back to me. Everytime he even looked away, command firmly "HEAL!" and pull his head to look forward. It seems stiff at first but it stops the dog from becomming engaged in the distraction at all. The trainer instructed to use a choke collar but some dog's develop "horners syndrom" from having restriction around their throats. I suggest using a harness as you have control over the bulk of the dog's weight without harming him should you have to pull him back to the 'heal' position. After the heal training, i noticed a difference within a day. W
ithin time, you will only need to say 'heal' and the dog will redirect his attention to you.. no more short leash. I hope this helped :) as a dog lover, i know how important it is to keep your pup safe :))

he needs to be socialized he is frightened and feels subordanant. he is feeling like they are dominant. take your dog to socilization classes and maybe that will work. the barking makes the other dog feel dominant and the dominant dog always puts other ones in place. think of a wolf pack. the alpha is dominant. the alpha controls other wolves in the pack by pinning them down to put them in their place. youre dog is the other dog. he probably doesnt feel secure.

Well first, you need to not freak out.

Then tell him no sternly, and tug on the leash once to divert his attention. Keep walking. Also don't let him succeed in getting away. He is the master then & it is dangerous for him to just take off when he wants to. He could get hit by a car, or so could you if you chase after him.

get a harness for your dog that when he tugs it tightens and he can't mve or get a shock collar but one that if he runs away and he dosnt come back after you call his name it will shock hi

ps it will just give him a little shock to get his attention

I dont think he spends to much time with other dogs. you should try and take him to a dog park and just let him play and get used to them. He is a big dog. he can take care of him self. But just keep an eye on his behavior and they way the other react

try a gentle leader collar or haltie , its like a halter on a horse and gives you great control. you can get them at petco or any other pet supply store

jeff g is right

Get a good halter, a German made Sporn as I did after lack of success with Gentle Leader over the nose (he pulls it off repeatedly) or the chest halter, he still pulled like an ox, me trailing behind, etc.

Get him into doggy day care and he will naturally assimilate with other dogs who teach each other quickly the "rules" of the pack", if he is very socially inept, some dogs will prob dislike him BUT the staff normally puts dogs of like temperment and sizes in with like dogs, so chances are: he'll learn to get along, to make at least one friend, to avoid dogs he doesn't like or are bullies (mine did) and learns most of all, best of all, WHO he is in the scheme of doggydom. Dogs are SO social, why do you think yours who seems to believe he is your "pal" suddenly bolts to get to other dogs, it is because he wants to do what comes naturally, meet and greet. Dogs who fear are those who get bit. Or who bite. Period. Fear is ignorance so he must NOT have been socialized young. He wants to BE a dog among his OWN kind so he repeats this scenario and fails cause he is socially inept. It is also as you see, potentially dangerous for him as well. He needs some doggy interaction and train
ing.

Training. YOU are leader. Hierarchy YOU up high in bed on couch, NOT HIM. He understands and respects hierarchy, the wolves down to the dogs, hierarchy is everything. HiM behind YOU when leaving or going OUT the DOG not him first, leaders face dangers FIRST, not the weak, not the child, but the leader OUT the DOOR and IN the DOOR first, leaders LEAD. Dogs are simple not complex, keep commands simple, show love but lead and keep the hierarchy uppermost in your mind, don't get lax and training is for the life of the dog, they always challenge rule and law, in the dog/wolf world, challenge means "You are leader NOW but I could be" so they test. Don't give him an inch when it comes to hierarchy, keep it clear and simple. Don't get lax.

INVITE him occasionally to the bed and it's DOWN when you are tired of it, he should immediately go down. SIT STAY in any situation where he is not responding, at the park whatever, use sit stay and keep him focused on sitting until you give the "come" command or whatever YOU want. IT is NOT what HE WANTS. He wants a LEADER OR he seeks to become ONE. YOU don't want a dog to lead YOU.

So at the park or wherever: He may learn a hard and deadly lesson from a really nasty dog who will NOT back down and you are there, standing helplessly watching the attack while that dog's owner may be hundreds of yards away or not even present. Dogs do kill one another, it isn't uncommon.

SO gain control even with distractions (other dogs) which you learn in training, be confident, keep a tight rein on him until he can learn to play occasionally and at YOUR discretion with one or two dogs at the park. Nice to be like the others grouped and laughing with their happy dogs (wouldn't that be nice that HE fit in so YOU can feel ok about him for a change?) but until he is trained and socialized, you cannot do this. He needs to know who is LEADER and when you or others are done and don't want to play, that he will "Come" and leave when you do. Other dogs will befriend him and recognize him at the park and play in the future, first he needs that training and socialization to know his place and not to fear his own kind.

So gain control over the situation and him. It will make both of you happy. Good luck.

Do check out the Sporn, it really worked on our headstrong monster lab and we actually enjoy walks again.

my friends father died last week. they have a boxer dog 8 yrs old. when he was dying the dog sat by his bed until he died. since then the dog won't eat anything, he just lies there with his head on his paws not sleeping just lying there. he won't respond to anything. it's really sad. it's 8 days now and he hasn't eaten although he's had a drink of water. we are just concerned he might die if he doesn't eat soon. can anyone help?

That's heartbreaking :(

Boil some chicken & cook some brown rice, mix them together as a special treat. You could also try mixing his kibble with chicken broth.

I am so sorry for the loss.

thats so sad. :(

you can try to give him special things he likes, chicken, biscuits, etc.

if that doesnt work, then go talk to your vet. the vet will tell you the best solution there is.

i hope he feels better soon!

That is really sad:( i guess they are just like humans sounds like he's depressed maybe taking him to the vet they may have tablets that could lift his mood to make sure he continues to eat.

I hope he pulls through!

I would put chicken broth in his water

take him to the vets.

I have 2 cats and three dogs. One night, I ran out of cat food (the dry type) and my cats were hungry. So since I had dog food only and the shops were closed, I gave them dog kibbles. They're more or less of the same shape and size and are made of the same ingredients - chicken. My cats took a nibble and refused the rest of the bowl, preferring to go hungry than eat dog food. The next day, i got them a fresh pack of made-for-cats kibbles and they immediately dived in and ate up. How come my cats knew what I gave them wasn't cat food?

I also know of dogs that won't eat cat food for the long run (not mine though, cos they're pigs and will eat anything).

It would be good if a pet food manufacturer can answer this question. Is there some special ingredient you put in cat and dog food that makes cats and dogs know which kibbles is who's? Also, nowadays, dogs are eating fish too - like salmon. You can't say it's the ingredient. How come they know the difference?

They know, especially dogs. If you leave the cat food bowl on the floor the dog will go after it before it goes for the dog food. Cat food is higher quality ingredients than dog food, and dogs know this because after they try cat food they think it tastes better. Cats usually won't eat the dog food if it is on the floor because of the same reasons. They know the cat food tastes better as well. Here is a solution to keep the dog from eating the cat's food. Put the cat food bowl up on the counter top where the dog can't reach it. Only the cat can jump up there, and the cat won't go near the dogs food bowl on the floor.

Cats should NOT eat dog food. Read the label. Garlic is good for dogs. Garlic and onions are toxic to cats and in larger amounts, poisonous.

Many vet pages and cat pages reference this

http://www.cat-world.com.au/CommonProductsPoisonousToCats.htm http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20070302005933AAmIpHe&kid=GK1XXHv.J2oroKVZqGNZ&s=comm&date=2008-05-17+07%3A53%3A56&.crumb=

I meant to say Read the Label of your dog food, most contain garlic, or garlic powder. I had asked my vet the same thing once because we have a cat who does like (a certain brand) dog food, so we had to find a brand she didn't like http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20070302005933AAmIpHe&kid=GK1XXHv.J2oroKVZqGNZ&s=comm&date=2008-05-17+07%3A57%3A22&.crumb=

DONOT EVER LET YOUR DOGS EAT CATFOOD AND YOUR CATS EAT DOG FOOD.

The formulation of pet foods requires that cat foods have different combinations of ingredients. This may cause a different smell and taste to the food.

also cats have an inability to produce tartarine, which requires that pet food manufactures provide an amount of this in there diet. this is not hte same for dogs, if you ask your vet they will advise you not to feed your cat dog food, due to this fact.

discuss this further with your vet at your next appointment.

They ask their friends.

They don't is the simple answer. I've fed my cat dog food and although she wasn't too keen on it, she ate it. I think it's to do with the density and bulk of the meat. If I mash the dog food for her she eats it. The dog just eats!!!

They are made with other ingerdents then just chicken. The cats can smell the difference

Even small dog kibbles are different than the ones made for cats - not just the ingredients (which is really important), but the texture and the smell too.

My dog will eat the cat food, my cats won't touch the dog food. Actually, I don't mind the catts not eating dog food, becasue they need differnt nutrition. There is stuff in cat food that they have to have, and I think it makes the cat food too rich for dogs.

stupid dogs will eat the cats food! a cat would never eat dog food.

They smell their food and walk to the other one food and smell

it. and walk back to theirs

Can a famous and distinguishable dog trainer like Cesar Milan train a male dog that's not neutured to calmly sit still next to a female dog in heat for a long time and not yelp and whine? Is it possible? I only hear about dog trainers and vets instructing to separate the dogs when the female dog is in heat. What about training the male dog to resist the urge of a female dog in heat and behave itself calmly?

I don't think that is ever possible. When a male dog is around a female dog in heat, I don't think they even know what's going on between them first smelling her and the ending result ha

it is definetly possible, i dont think you will need a trained professional either. just let the dogs play, and be around each other all the time. Neudering your male dog will obviously help too. If the male dog does try to make a move isolate the male dog immediatly. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20090425113436AA1R7WD&kid=B8ZmLFHdAkIE6HBVYVZP&s=comm&date=2009-06-29+19%3A26%3A40&.crumb=

It is possible. My husband had a trained dog long time ago and he was able to sit half an hour side to side to a female dog in heat. But here is the thing.... The trainer told my husband that only this dog out of 200 that he had trained was able to do this at command. I have no doubt that Cesar Milan could do this, but it is extremely difficult to achieve because it depends on the character and disposition of the dog too.

At EVERY dog show in the US there are b*tches in heat - and yet the dogs are expected/required to behave themselves.

Certainly keeping the dogs separate when you cannot monitor them is required, but trained dogs learn that they don't get to breed unless told to (or some idiot leaves them alone with an in season b*tch).

What good would any service dog or police canine or tracking dog be if they responded to every b*tch in season they encounter??

I have been watching a female dog in heat for about 2 weeks now, my male is not fixed. I have been able to control them, at night they go into their kennels, we take 2-3 walks a day, I even let them out in the back yard.

It is my opinion that if you have the time, patience, and leader of the pack ability, then it is possible to go against their natural instincts. I am not a dog trainer, nor have I ever read a book on how to train a dog.

Of course. As Animal Artworks stated, how is a working dog supposed to work if every time he run across a female in heat, he was distracted. Training is important as are a few other things such as huge pack drive, a clear head on the dog, etc!

Hope I helped.

I don't think so. A female in heat iniates an instinctual reaction in males that is incredibly hard to control. I believe it would be impossible to "train out" or override the brain chemistry of a male when he senses a female in heat.

Survival and reproduction are the two strongest instincts any mammal has. The male dog is overwhelmed by her smell. Why would you be so cruel to try and "sit" him with no reaction? Remove him from her presence instead.

No

That's why you never want a male guard dog that has not been neutered. Maybe even not then. All a good thief needs is a female in heat and he/she can rob you blind.

Just tie him up on a tie out or put him in a kennel or dog run =) lol even a dummy can do that.

no they couldn't

I'm taking care of some family's dogs for the week, but I only own one dog. My dog always seems very aggressive towards other dogs, but they seem to be getting along alright. My dog is always trying to lick under the chin of one of the other dogs, and that dog doesn't seem to like it much. Is that some type of communication, and if yes, what does it mean?

Also...since I've got you here :) ... my dog keeps taking the toys aways from that particular dog. If the one dog starts playing by himself with a toy, or if they start a game of tug of war, my dog starts growling and takes the toy away. Is that how dogs normally play, or is my dog being a bit selfish?

Licking the face/mouth is submission to the other dog, most domimate dogs don't like it much and will growl and show agression. its what puppies do to mom wolves to invoke... hmm well feeding.... it makes them up chuck food for the pups. older dogs who do this to an alpha is corrected by a growl or just a show of teeth. it also mean ur dog is a bit insecure.

note how the other dog is standing his chest out, head high, tail up. he's holding his ground, this is a dog that starts a fight with others that want to fight. but ur dog is saying i want to be friends....u are boss. i would correct the aggresser. a light touch on the shoulder or neck. and be sure the dog walks away not u.

taking toys is a normal play at my house, it involes growling and barking...and running around like crazy dogs they chase and play tug o war. but i stop play when it goes beyond playing to being slightly aggressive. i can hear the change of tone in the dogs... a growl deepens to a snarl...and a bark changes to that deep growlish bark. that is like when someone is at the door. they stand differ..like i said above....their brother and have been together their whole lives.

but i can't see if ur dogs are playing..or if they mean business.

Obviously the Dog is either stressed or the dog is jealous of the other dog. : ) http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20070719092805AAVkuky&kid=NYxUWnLgBG0iVd744U0t&s=comm&date=2009-05-04+16%3A00%3A01&.crumb=

the dog might like other dog http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20070719092805AAVkuky&kid=A8ZmPlbKV3a48EkFQp4T&s=comm&date=2009-07-30+14%3A02%3A54&.crumb=

All together he is just showing affection either that or the other dog has food on his chin. All dogs play tug of war that way they are like kids if one plays with a toy the other will try to take it away.

Simple, your dog is jealous. He is also showing submission to the other dog, meaning that the other dog is more dominate, which is the licking under the chin. It is complety normal, just like your dog licking your face. He is letting you know that he knows you are the boss and is not trying to take it from you.

I just came back from taking my female miniature pinscher to the vet for her shots and as soon as I got home my male chihuahua tried to mount her several times. I know she's not in heat because she just finished a few days ago. Maybe she smells like another dog that's in heat because when we got to the vet there were about 15 other dogs there in the reception area with us. What do you think?

darkangel22, I wish I had a a miniature pinscher.

He is probably smelling the male dogs not the females and trying to reestablish his rank as the dominant male dog in the house

got in a fight with a raccoon twice his size. It had rabies and was vicious but my do broke its leg and bit holes in it. My dog came out with just a small scrape on his muzzle. he is a jack Russell terrier and weighs 14 pounds. he also has fought a 45 pound pit bull mix and won. is that weird or what!?!? im not lying either the pit bull was bleeding everywhere!!! i swear!

JRt were bred to kill rodents. Anything with Terrier was pretty much originally to kill something.

Wow. You're proud that you allowed your dog to fight another dog to the point that it was "bleeding everywhere." What is wrong with you?

For small dogs they are very protective of their people. They were bread to hunt foxes and other game. It's totally believable. I saw a beagle attack a pit bull once. Of course, the pit bull won and casued 1200$ worth of damage. That was a rough day.

Hopefully your dog didn't get rabies.

I have a female Jack Russell that is some 11 yrs old now

she is outguned by the three pugs in the household

but they all love one another a lot and are a rock solid little pack---

Baby has been a genuine joy to have in the family

She is an avid hunter of small game---but she has a mothering instinct that has seen three other much older dogs to a peaceful close to long lives --- she---standing by them and actually guiding them around when they were too infirm to locate things for themselves--- and sleeping near them and washing their faces to show them love--- she has actually taught several of us in this clan about love and devotion on a level that each of us can say is an amazing journey ---as she ages herself-- we all are going out of our way now to see that SHE has everything she needs or wants---she has earned it !!!!!

what is your question? I've had a jack russell before and yes, they can be mean when they need to be.

No, it's not weird. Jack Russells are scrappy little dogs who are more likely to be aggressive to other animals than not be.

i reccomend taking your dog to a vet right away if your dog bit the raccon he could easily 1)crave blood and attack some one else so he can get a taste(dogs r like that i had to put a dog down jack russell too) and 2) take him to a vet for a rabies shot he may have contracted it from the raccoon

If your dog got into a fight with a rabid coon, then you should take it to the vet... like right now!!!

Shots or no, it could still get sick because of the rabies virus and you should notify the vet. He might have only a scratch, but what about internal injuries? After all, the coon was twice his size.

You deserve bragging rights true, but have the little guy checked out and be sure he's okay.

I noticed my dog has been gnawing at he back left paw a lot and I checked it and it is a red and she keeps limping.. and she whimpers walking on it..

What could be wrong? is there anything I can do to ease the pain til she goes to the vet?

Did he step on a thorn or something sharp(glass etc). Maybe she got bit by a spider(happened to my dog). You should get a cloth, dip it in warm water, squeeze out all the water and then apply it to the foot and then take her to the vet asap

My dog has had a few issues with his paws. He got a tick in between his toes once and it got red and was sore. He also has environmental allergies and licks his feet all the time which is a major sign of allergies. Anyway he licked his feet so much he gave himself an infection. The vet said it was commonly known as "wet paw". He takes an allergy medicine now if he is outside for more than an hour and I've had no problems since. Also maybe there is a splinter in his foot check it well with a magnifying glass. You can soak it in some peroxide for a few minutes and put some triple antibiotic ointment on it and wrap it up for the night until he can see the vet. Good luck.

Don't give your dog any medication or apply anything. Wait for the vet to tell you what to do, try and get her there ASAP.

One thing you can do is, take a warm, damp washcloth and gently clean her back left paw every few hours until you go to the vet.

Good luck!

The breed does not matter, I would take her to the vet, sorry but no vets on here.

it could be an infected cut, something in the pad of the foot, allergies and they will cause her to chew and lick on it and get it all red

A vet visit asap please

it might be broken and swollen or someone might of bitten it ??

call the vet and don't play with your pet s health!!

vet. when a dog is "normal" vomiting a little is to remove stuff they don't need, usually mine will eat some grass to make herself puke if she has an upset tummy.

when the dog is pregnant you have to worry about her and all the pups, so if something is off, you need to make sure there isn't something worse going on, especially since the hormones and dietary needs are also way different when pregnant than normal.

I would call the vet. I took in a pregnant stray and she never did that but every once in a blue moon one of my dogs will but it is only a one time thing...never a repeat the same day.

I would call the vet and see what they think. If they want to see her than by all means bring her in. I believe the yellow is the stomach juices meaning her belly is empty...but I am NOT a vet.

Ok this may be unpleasant..

Did she have to pee? Did she miss a potty break? Dogs will sometimes lick and swallow to avoid going in the house, and just hurl it up later.

But these people are right, it could be something else.

Pure yellow foamy liquid is acid.

If it is just the once and it hasn't been going on all day then she should be fine.

It normally comes with an empty tummy, so feed her a little and see if stops.

my dog is a boy and some times when he has a upset stomach he'll vomit up yell foamy stuff i would take her to the vet

was it eating any grass if so that is not a bad thing cause it acutely

good 4 them

how many week is she

go to the vet

I just adopted a small chihuahua from the vet, and ever since then he has barked continuously at my brother who comes over each week for our family video game night. We can't get him to stop so we have to put him in the upstairs bathroom and he still barks. We have tried everything from bark sound controllers, and bark collars. I have a hard time understanding why he does this.

Please any feedback would be great

Thanks

Animals can sense evil.

maybe your dog needs to connect with your brother since neither of them are going anywhere, they should learn to get along. Dogs are good at reading people. try having time set aside on those nights so the dog can interact with your brother. Have some treats handy for good response. the treats will be a distraction for the dog and a large bone will keep him busy during the visit so he doesn't need to be placed away.dogs need to be trained to get along with relatives just like a single child excepting a little new sibling. It can be resolved with time, attention, and patience.also the bark collar isn't a good teaching tool it is like punishment rather than a lesson of manners. try having your brother command the dog than reward him. this may give an opportunity to see your brother as a treat and not a threat, his visits may become looked forward too.

Your dog may just be intimidated by your brother. Many dogs cover up that they're afraid by being aggressive. I would spend an evening introducing him to your brother so that they he won't be afraid of him everytime he comes over. Make sure that you're with him while in the room with your brother and don't force him into his lap or anything. Have you and your brother play with him to show him he's alright. Don't pressure your dog into liking someone, but kindof ease him into knowing he's okay and that he won't hurt him.

Whether he dislikes your brother or not, your Chi is NOT in charge.

And if your brother is trying to acknowledge him while he is in this state of excitement ask him to stop. The more attention you give negative behavior the more they will do it.

When he starts to bark give him a stern NO and use a nice spray bottle full of water.

Often this will work. If that doesn't, tell him NO and shake a can of coins.

My dogs shut up real fast when they hear the coin can.

my beagle does the exact same thing with my brother. you know they say dogs can see angels and demons. this one time when i was staying over at a friends , her dog got up and started waging its tail at thin air and tried being playful with it. there was no one around the dog and it was facing an empty corner. another time my dog would just start growling in the middle of the night when there was no one around...go figure. animals see things we dont see, my rabbit has similar instincts. sometimes he stands on his hind legs as if trying to reach a figure, and its not stretching, you should see him do it, you would know...

My guess is that your brother hasen't been here long enough for ur chihuahua to trust him. My puppy barks at my dad because my dad's always mean to him and my puppy barks at random people as well. Also I heard that if you get youer puppy neutered, they won't have temper-tantrums. Bring you chihuahua up close to your brother (Put a muzzle on him) and let your bro. pet him and feed him in his hands (Oh treats as well!) And I hope it will go for a bond of trust!

Hopes this helps! :) :)

By the way do NOT try bark collars.Your chihuahua has developed a fear against your brother. Also shock collars are a big NEGATIVE.If you put a bark collar it will also develop a fear against that collar and may make the dog want to bark more.

he does this cuz he is protecting you. give ur brother some turkey or some people food and put them both in a room and shut the door. ur brother will show his back to him and move in slowly with no sound. this may take a while but trust me it works.

I would say the chihuahuas was abused in the past and your brother reminds the dog of the abuser. just give it time. Congrats on getting a chihuahua. aren't they great?

lol maybe your brother has done something to your dog, but also dogs are good at judging characters, worst case scenario is that your brother is a rapist out to get your family and your dog senses it( lol it could be possible)

Is your brother a big or tall guy? Sometime chihuahuas are frightened by tall people.

dogs are wonderful judges of character, maybe there is a good reason that your dog doesn't like your brother.

Chihuahua are loud dogs they will bark at anything

he must have done something bad to the little guy so he doesn't like him

or he senses badness in him ??? not sure

first answer is the right one.

whenever I touch my dog its fur shocks me or makes my hands tingle

No but that sounds pretty freaky to me. Hope my answer was helpful?

Hi!

Are u using A BARK CONTROL COLLAR?

If yes.. then read the below content. Hope it helps.

Bark control collars that give shocks deliver a short electric correction from the collar to the dog's neck area. Dogs with lots of fur may not feel it. Other dogs, especially ones who are barking because of fear or anxiety or aggressiveness, may get more agitated and continue to bark.

Professional dog trainers can teach you how to use these kinds of collars safely and appropriately. Timing the correction is very important. If used incorrectly, the anti-bark electronic collars can worsen the barking problem rather than control it.

maybe you can find a way to plug her in & save on your electric bill ...

That sounds weired.

Ok so I rescued my new dachshund from the animal shelter like 5 days ago. He's been doing great so far. But I've noticed that he's been having diarreha and it's been bloody. I just took him to the vet for a wellness exam, and the vet said he was healthy. I just dont understand why he's got bloddy diarreha. Can someone plz help me??

I'll never ever begin to understand how someone can have a dog pooping blood... and instead of taking the dog to a DOCTOR (ie: veterinarian)... no... the clueless owner has to ask a bunch of strangers on an internet board what to do....

From a shelter, this could be parvovirus or coronavirus (or severe worms). Schedule with the vet again and take in a "poop sample". This is particularly important if the diarrhea is more foul smelling than would be expected or the blood is dark, not fresh (sometimes, fresh red blood just indicates the dog is straining to go and his backside is raw). From my experience with rescue dogs, a dog can be "fine" one day and the next be showing symptoms of parvo. If you don't trust the vet you saw, choose another. Look on the internet for a local kennel club if you need a vet recommendation. Usually show dog folks will know who the best vets in your area are.

check if your dog has eaten any clothing or tissue paper but don't worry dachshunds usually eat stuff like that but it will pass sooner or later you just need to check on your dog every once and a while to make sure he doesn't eat anything like clothes or tissue paper again because it is very hard for a dachshund's stomach to break down stuff like that just make sure he has a little more water then usual and he will be fine

you need to take him back to the vet...how long has be been like that?

VETS!!!! NOW!!!!!!

WHY ARE YOU WASTING YOUR DOGS TIME ON HERE WHEN WITHOUT QUESTION YOU SHOULD BE AT THE VETS!!!!!!!!

I was wandering if anyone knew the reason for my problem. Everytime I come home from somewheres she will come runing up to me and start crying and yellping. I figure its only because she misses me but is the realy the only reason? Thank you :)

Sounds like she may have some separation and anxiety issues.

My dog used to do that, it got pretty bad.

Do not pet her or talk to her when she's like that, you're only encouraging it.

A friend of mine, who was a dog trainer, suggested I completely ignore my dog until she stopped whining and settled down. ( that was very hard for me to do ) . It worked.

Good luck.

She is just REALLY excited TRUST ME my dog does the same thing! just be careful sometimes they might pee too!

maybe the dogs scared of losing you or scared of something. So keep her near you at times.or its either cos she loves you.

my dof does that to shes such a mush lol=) but shes just very affectionate and missed you

He used to love it when i tickled his balls but ever since we got him neutered he hasn't enjoyed it as much. Does anyone know where else dogs like to be scratched?

Why do I get the feeling you are a TROLL?

well i can awnser one of your questions

the dog probly doesnt like it any more because when hes neutered the balls where completely removed there fore theres nothing left to tickle

as for your other questiong just try scratching his belly

Duh he no kinger has balls to tickle, try ears, belly..........

sounds like someone is getting sleepy. Go to bed!

I had her to the vet on Friday because she was on and off with diarrhea and vomiting, he gave her antibiotics and she has been fine ever since.

what would make think she has an obstruction? Has she eaten any bones? If not vomiting that's a good sign. Could just be constipated. Make sure is getting plenty of fluids. And try some 100% pumpkin about a tablespoon Not the pie filling kind of pumpkin it has to be 100% pure. Its in all stores. That should help her have a bowel movement.Good luck. Hope all works out for her. Been there I can relate with stress.

my dog is trained when i am home to go outside, when i leave he pees on the floor. how do i break this habit? please give me suggestions.

he does it on the floor because he cant get outside i have a puppy she does the same thing so i just put a towel down and trained her to go on there, but then they usually break out of the habbit :), i just got her nose and got my 2 finers and just tapped her nose and said "WHATS THAT ,......WHATS THAT" you dog will defo break out of it habbit that way it worked with our dog :) xx

Don't leave out water or food while gone. Feed before you leave and take out to use it. This should help. Get a set schedule for the dogs feeding and going out to potty.

I would recommend using one of these professional dog training guides. Here is why:

you can get opinions from different people and try different things, but you easily could end up training your dog, then having to un-train him because the technique did not work and now you are finding a new technique.

What I am saying is that you need to get a tried and proven system. Find the system and stick with it. Be consistent.

and my dog bites someone will i have to get rid of my dog. like get her out to sleep cause she attacked someone?

Well, I would say that if she had all her shots, and only bit someone becasue you were being jumped (she was defending you), they would do like a test or something to see if shes aggresive. BUT if she was defending you, then I guess no. Although I'm not sure and thats just what I would say. It might also matter in what state you live - I think... :)

Biting the person mugging you? Or bitting an innocent person?

If the dog bites criminal you "might" have no problem, that "could" be self-defense as long as the damage it's proportional to the danger; for example you can't allow the dog to kill the person if your life was not in danger. So the key is not to use more force than needed.

Now if the dog bites an innocent person then you can get in serious problems, s the victim dies then your mother can even get charged with manslaughter, criminal negligence (or even murder if the DA think it fits the facts). Not to mention a big lawsuit.

There is already a long list of people that have gone to jail in the US when their dogs bite and/or kill innocent people.

EDIT

But now being more realistic: How are the chances that you get "jumped" just in front of your house with your mom ready to unleash the dog to save you just on time???

I don't believe so as long as the dog was protecting you from serious bodily harm, but you never know what will happen with democrats in charge.

my dog snores every night and its so annoying! when he sleeps with my mom, she has to kick him out.

Help him lose weight. Excess weight is the most common cause of snoring in dogs.

you selfish beasts.

haha jk jk

well maybye he's just really tired. my dog snores too! lol

but i love it cuz it makes him seem so human! =]

think about it that way lol =]

he can jump on the bed but if you touch him he cries he'll walk around he cries what should i do ?

Give him to a responsible and educated owner that would take him to a vet!!!???

Just a suggestion

p.s 'played hard' ... as a responsible owner you should know when to intervene and when to command your dog to rest by lying down or sitting or putting him on leash and walking calmly at your side until he is calm and rested - this keeps adrenaline levels normal level and stops the hard play/rough play.

If your dog has been playing with other dogs, in 'hard/rough' play you should read up on when your dogs is sending calming or submitting signals to the other dog/s so it can rest and is being ignored by socially inept dogs or pushy dogs or is pushing others dogs to play when they dont want to which can turn into defensive wrestles / or power struggle wrestles .. 'Canine Body Language' - a photographic guide by Brenda Aloff is the best book i have read yet to date. you can get it off amazon.com on sale.

take him to the vet .

And the cat is hiding! also the cows are all sitting!

o.O //_^ i hope a storm is brewing! it's been really hawt and dry. wil it thunder and lightning?

yes animals can sense a storm much better than we can

i dog can hear thunder before we can

Sound travels at the same speed for all species... http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20090805144954AAwMlkC&kid=A5FqGUTpBzA8LLnzt1Te&s=comm&date=2009-08-06+22%3A57%3A19&.crumb=

Yes; it definitely will!

yes definatly, what state r u from cuz i woold love a good storm

hi is there anything out there that does not cost a lot but would do my dog tess good ,she has arthartius in her left leg .i have just finished work and am trying to be a bit thrifty i get meta-cam for her. is there anything on market that will help her?

So sorry to read about Tess. I'm not sure if this will help or even if it is still available, it is called 'horse-oil' a lineament. Check first if it can be used on dogs. Get well soon Tess - woof.

Chow darling, May I suggest the Chemist, if not available to your local one, do try the larger Boots/Super Drug etc. It will ALSO HELP you & I (me already). http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20090805104144AAaM0eM&kid=EJtoPGHIMW23lCcMzXNs&s=comm&date=2009-08-07+13%3A18%3A06&.crumb=

You must have got Met-a- cam from your vet as you can't buy it over the counter and it can work out expensive. However, it is the best for pain relief.

Don't let her lay on cold floors, make sure you dry her if she gets wet. I used to give my old dog who had arthritis - gloucomasine tablets also the Pedigree chews but basically it was the Met-a-cam that was the most effective.

Glucosomine tablets are good, you need to give them for around 6 weeks before you notice a difference

Cod Liver Oil Tablets work on my Dog

if you put a heating pad on her leg for about an hour the pain should go away for a few days but for long term help i would contact your vet

I am a guy and was thinking about getting his Paw tattooed on my back with his name under. Would it look good on my back or on my arm?

I say on your right arm...because your dog is as important to you as your right arm. (or left---if you're left-handed...). It just seems like if you put the paw on your back, you are saying (in an unspoken way) that your dog was behind you, and not beside you. Just my opinion.

I'm not into tattooing (other than my dog, for identification!) or body piercing so to me, this isn't something I'd remotely consider doing. I find it just a little odd, to be honest. And just consider how you might feel about what you are going to do, in years to come - are you doing to do this with every subsequent dog you might have? When I've had to say goodbye to one of my beloved hounds, they are with me still, in my heart. But each to their own I suppose.

I am sad for you that your dog is coming to the end of his days however. They just don't live long enough do they.

Arm, maybe.

Arm.

That's a beautiful thing to do! I'm getting my Toby's paw tattooed when I'm 16, I'm 15 soon, so only a year to wait!

I'm so sorry about your dog, you're doing the right thing though, stay with him, and let your face be the last thing he sees before he goes to rainbow bridge.

Arm, because if your pets paw is tattooed onto your arm it means a strong friendship between you and your pet.

Left arm or left shoulder blade... because its the side your heart is on.

I have my old dogs name tattooed on my left upper for arm

No do it on your chest. It is sexy attractive, and easy to hide.

do it on the left side so its on your house!

On your back up on your sholder,

arm!! i wish i woulda thought of that when my dog died...i grew up with her ..

he stiks tryes to go on her and stick w.e

Is your male dog fixed?

Bleeding, and it worried me alot I was wondering if it is normal since he was fixed.

More than likly it was from your females "period" did it keep bleeding? If so call a vet not normal. If no then that was prob it just keep an eye on him and make sure he isnt acting funny. I dont think you are an irresponsible pet owner cause hints you got your dog nutered . Dont listen to people that dont know what they are talking about. Good luck

The same thing happened to one of my neutered males about 5 years ago when I was looking after a friend's female for a week. They hadn't told me she was in season when she came so consequently I hadn't bothered to separate her from the rest of my dogs.

I just happened to look out of my window and saw that my 18 month old castrated male was mounting her and had actually penetrated. As I shouted out to him he withdrew and there was blood spurting from the side of his penis. The friction had caused this to happen and there was a small split on one side. I managed to control the bleeding by holding a wet cloth against it for a while but it was very worrying at the time. Thank goodness he had been neutered!

Since that time if ever any of my girls are in season my neutered males are separated along with my entire dog from the females for the whole three weeks to avoid anything like this ever happening again, let alone any unwanted pregnancies occurring by the one dog who hasn't been castrated.

Neutered dogs can still get the urge to mate and they will if they are living with females on heat so the safest and kindest thing is to keep them apart. The only saving grace is they cannot impregnate the female but it is extremely painful for the dog to try and perform the act.

The safest thing would be to have your female spayed and they can then both live in harmony together without this kind of thing happening again. Once she is spayed there will be no temptation for him to attempt to mate her.

My neutered male goes crazy over any female in heat. It is kinda funny, he looks like a dirty old man! And don't let him fool ya, he has the instinct and they can get stuck together and like others have said, just no babies as a result. Bleeding is what females do in heat, but if he is bleeding from his penis, FOR SURE, you should probably get that checked out. Depending on the amount of blood and the time frame will determine your urgency.

Good luck!

first i have to ask a Q how long has ur male be neutered? if he was only done recently that;s ur answer he still has testosterone in his system when a male dog is neutered the testosterone will be in his system for about 30 days but he will not be able to father pups. and yes it is normal the blood u saw was from the female not ur male, he will still attempt to mate with the female but nothing will come of it no puppies hope this helps good luck and congrats for loving ur dog enough to have him neutered

There's really no reason that he would be bleeding unless you're confusing HER blood as the bleeding...

He's neutered, but the hormonal scent she's putting off right now is just too much for him to handle...Yes, he can still mate, but there won't be a litter of pups to show for it..

Why is she not spayed ??

It's not unusual for a neutered dog to still attempt to breed. The bleeding is not normal, though, and should be checked. Unless it was blood from the female.

It's possible that they came un-stuck too soon. Was/is one of them in pain? If he was still swollen at the time they separated, he could have torn her vaginal wall or injured himself.

if the female was in heat than the blood is from her. dogs bleed too when its that time of the month or whenever dogs get it

lol those dogs need pants
