My dog swallowed a chicken bone will he die from it?

my dog swallowed a chicken bone . it was like a drummy sized one he is an English mastiff and is 144 pounds but im no sure if it will hurt him my parents say he could die from it......will he????

Well if he isn't gagging, then it made it safely down his throat. Now you have to see if it makes it through his tummy and intestines OK.

You will have to monitor his pooping closely.

You need to make sure he poops. The bones could cause an obstruction. But this is probably unlikely since chicken bones are pretty soft and a dog's stomach acid is pretty potent.

Now, if he is pooping..you need to look at it to see if there is any blood in it. The blood could mean it splintered and is cutting him up inside.

If that happens, call the vet and just feed him plain cooked rice and ground beef, until the vet can see him.

For a Mastiff, chances are he will not die, so don't worry. However, he MIGHT get a really sore tummy and bum.

Raw or cooked he may or may not have problems because of eating it. Sure, raw is better for a dog than cooked (which is never good), but even raw bones can be bad for dogs if they gulp them down, which is why some dogs (gulpers) on a raw diet do better with ground meaty bones.

So there is a danger, either way, since your dog "swallowed" a sizable chicken bone. Since he doesn't do this regularly, it is more likely he will not have a problem, but it is always comforting to discuss any medical concern with your Vet.

Raw? Or cooked?

Raw bones are not usually a problem for dogs.

Cooked? Yeah, those can splinter, causing damage to the dog's digestive system any step along the way ... esophagus, stomach, intestines ...

If your dog is fine after 5 days or so, breathe a huge sigh of relief ... your dog is OK. Meantime, you've got to watch DILIGENTLY for any sign of distress or abnormality ... blood in the poo, for example. If you see anything that doesn't look right, you MUST call the vet. It could be a life-threatening emergency such as intestinal perforation.

if he is still alive now he is fine,

chicken bones are no different to other bones, but they splinter and could cut the dogs throat or make it choke more than the others

but if there was a problem it would have happened on initial swallow, and providing he isnt sitting there choking, bleeding or not breathing your dog is fine,

you should never give a dog chicken bones! they can splitter and are harmful to a dog . take the dog to a vet asap!
