Whats kind of dog would you suggest for me and my family?

- Dont wanna big dog

- Aimee has slight allergies to dogs, but only like big furry ones.

- Want a friendly dog, nothing that will bark like hell

- Prefabally something fairly small.

And i heard somewhere cross-breeds are better. Is this true? and what kind of cross-breeds? We dont know a whole lot on dogs so thanks : )

pugs..on the smaller side...good with children...sensitive to heat.. take a little longer to train...dont normally bark..they shed...

Cross breeds are NOT necessarily "better." They can make great pets, but you need to understand a few things:

One, there is no way to predict ANY trait a mutt will have so they are not the best for allergies unless BOTH dogs are considered to be so.

Two, you do not PAY large amounts of money for these dogs, you adopt them for $100 or so from your local shelter.

Three, GOOD breeders do not intentionally breed mutts. PERIOD. End of story.

The family needs to sit down and make a list of traits you all want in a dog. Friendly, small, no shedding, low dander is a GOOD start - but what about energy level? Exercise needs? Grooming needs? Trainability?

Once you know what you want you can either start looking at specific AKC recognized breeds and comparing them to your list OR go into a shelter and talk to one of the experienced members about matching a dog in the shelter to your family.

PS - Dogs that shed OR have skin issues will not likely be good for your sister (?) so be wary.

I know you don't want a big dog, but I think you should look into a Labrador Retriever. They are the perfect family dog, extremely friendly, loyal, they would never bite the kids, have a hell of a patience. I doubt you'd regret getting one, and if your not already one, they'll make you a dog lover. They're not huge either, German Shepard's are way bigger. Lab's are more of a medium-big.

Since you don't know a lot about dogs, you should try fostering a dog first. Locate a Rescue group for Cocker Spaniels or Poodles (hypoallergenic) online. You will see pictures of dogs as well as information on how they came to the rescue group and the progress made with them to date. Some have been in foster care already and have even been trained. They are very honest about health issues and behavioral problems as well. Good luck.

yes crossbreeds are healthier and smarter easier to train than purebreds..read these sites...get a minature goldendoodle..

i am partial to shichons (bichon and shih tzu cross). i have one and love him to death. they don't shed, so they're good for allergy sufferers! they do need to be groomed a lot though! they aren't yappy. mine only barks when someone rings the doorbell. they're small, usually between 12 and 15 pounds. they're super friendly! really good with kids especially. cross breeds are said to be healthier because of hybrid vigor, which is a theory that says that when two breeds are crossed, the result is a dog which doesn't inherit the bad traits from both parent breeds. for more information, go to www.lillybits.com. this is a breeder of shichons. if you don't want a cross, get a purebred bichon!

You should try a choodle (chihuahua and poodle), they are small and loving, and they have poodle hair so they won't bother your sister

Jack Russels are good with childen don't bark a lot and don't run up the bill for health or grooming

I would get a Standard Poodle. They are big, but they don't shed and are great with allergies. They are very friendly and I believe they don't bark much either.

Beagles are also very sweet, they have short hair and are fairly small, but howl like crazy.

English Bulldogs are adorable. I love them soo much :-) They aren't tiny, and have short fur. So cute :-)

I would get a beagle because if you bribe them with food you can train them to do anything they love kids and people don't shed allot short coat are not very big cute and mostly couch potato you would love it or get a puggle i would get the beagle though mostly female(cuz if a male smells a female in season he will go nuts

Shih Tzu

Schnauzers. I say schnauzers. I'll give you info on them:

Giant Schnauzer:

-Acute senses, gentle, friendly with it's family and children, fearless (your sister could get her big dog without bad allergies)

Standard Schnauzer

-Brave, obedient, agile, active, highly trainable. Males may be aggressive towards other animals.

Miniature Schnauzer

-Friendly with people, alert, but barks well (I should know; my aunt has two)

Care and Exercise:

Enjoy to run at fast pace on lead, should occasionally be allowed to exercise freely in a big, open space. Coat may need to be stripped, brushing every day, (personally think every once in a while will suffice). Some may say to dock the tail, or crop the ears, but both are completely unnecessary (they will say it is because the tail is too long or something; it shouldn't be)

Hehe, I have a lot of info...

However, I also suggest you check all of this (except the tail and ear thing; I stand by that) with a professional breeder.
