Is it possible my dog is retarded?

He is a 2 year old mutt. He is fearful of everything and gets startled all the time whenever he sees something new or goes to another place. He keeps on staring here and there and even at the ceiling.

In the car he keeps switching his head from one window to the other window. At home he tries to sit at the corners of the wall only.

And whenever there is loud noise outside he tries to hide under the table. Is this behavior normal or is he retarded?

Hi, it is possible that he has a mental disorder. Your vet should be able to answer your question through blood work. One of the gals at my vets office has a bulldog that is mentally challenged. She compares him to a child with downs syndrome, and is considered a special needs dog. Check with your vet to make sure. Good luck

he probably just skittish you should try to socialize him with as many people and animals as possible also toys and treats should help distract him from his fears

Wow, this sounds exactly like one of my dogs. I often have wondered the same thing. It is like she has a mind of a hamster. We call her sensitive to be nice about not calling her retarded.

For the Table fearful thing, that's normal if a dog is being or has been abused or somehow injured in the past.

As for his staring, that's him focusing on things you can't see.

For the car issue, that's normal. He wants to see everything.

For the corner thing, maybe he's been trained to sit only in corners in the past.

Anything with a brain can be developmentally slow.

Just because he is scared does not mean he is retarded. He is unsecure and needs help. Give him toys and treats.

I would have his ears checked by vet and he sounds as if some trauma happened to him early in his life. He's not retarded but afraid of open places. Do you have a large carrier for him to feel safe in? He needs to be sheltered from his surroundings and loud noises. Put towel, his toy and a bowl of water &food in his carrier and set it in a quiet spot in your house. When he acts spooked or just restless put him in it. Also in the car it would help. And hold him in your lap and show love to him as much as possible. Prove to him he's safe.

Dogs *can* be "developmentally challenged" in the intelligence department. However, it is not very common and I really do not think that's what's going on here. It sounds much more like your dog is excessively fearful, most likely due to lack of socialization as a puppy. Dogs need to be exposed to many new and different people/places/and things as puppies or they can develop excessive fear towards anything unfamiliar. Excessive fear to the point that you describe is far from normal and is, IMO, very unhealthy for any dog and leads to a very poor quality of life. You should seriously consider getting your dog some professional help in the form of an animal behaviorist and possibly consider behavioral modification drugs in addition to training (the drugs by themselves are unlikely to help much, but in combination with training to help your dog become more confident and less fearful they could make a world of difference).

I would say he has OCD or anxiety disorder. Get on Youtube and watch Ceasar Millan he deals with those exact types of problems you talk about and explains very well how to help the problem.

I don't think it is normal, nor do I think he is retarded, I just think he is very fearful, maybe you need to invest in some training or an animal behaviorist. Good Luck!

Could he be Blind Or Deaf Or partially Blind or Deaf?

It's possible he may have a learning disabiliity, which, as someone mentioned, could be ruled out by your vet.

Just because he's a mutt, doesn't mean he's "daft", all dogs work the same, and all dogs,no matter what some people think, are super smart. They learn by watching us, and can be taught to do just about anything.

More than likely, he's fearful, and insecure about those things. I reccommend you check out clicker training, http://www.clickertraining.com. It's positive, and it builds a lasting relationship with your dog. I've clicker trained all my dogs, since they were just pups. They learn soo much from this type of training. This is often used to rehabilitate shelter dogs, who've had abusive pasts.

What your dog really needs is for you to seek out a trainer or animal behaviorist who uses positive techniques. Hope that helps!

No its just a daft dog mutt's are abit daft though my mate had one and he was so daft until she sold him beacuse he recked the house. so BEWARE yours could do te same.

I ask this questions about my dogs everyday. You can work with him to not be so scared of things, but it is not easy. My GF's Chiuahua is terried of any lound noise and also of anything that is over his head. Depending on where he came from he may have had some kind of truama in his life.
