Why are there patches of rusty red on my dog?

There are rusty red spots around my dogs eyes and mouth and even around her genitals? She is a white shiatzu-terrier so the colour really stands out... what could it be?

This color is from the bodily fluids that naturally accumulate in those areas, such as tears, saliva, etc. It's in the genital area because she is licking there. This is typical for white animals, esp dogs.

You can clean those areas with a dilution of hydrogen peroxide and water, be careful esp around the eyes and use a very light solution of hydrogen peroxide so you don't hurt her eyes, you may even be able to go to a pet store and purchase something that's made especially to clean the discoloration off. While you're at the pet store, get an eye ointment to put in her eyes so whatever you use there to clean the discoloration won't burn her eyes. Get an ointment that doesn't contain any medicine because, there is no need to medicate her when she doesn't need it, talk to a salesperson at the pet store and find out what they recommend.

Usually it's not a sign of illness or disease unless there are other symptoms. If there are, the best thing is to have her see a vet.

I thought shiatzu was a Japanese healing therapy? WOW.

You have a crossbreed, of unknown origin with totally different ancestors, so whatever you dog's colour or coat type turns out to be is completely unpredictable, as is size, temperement, health.

That is why breeders breed purebred dogs, to better predict the outcome.

Without seeing a picture, I suspect these are just saliva stains on a white coat.

How old is she? Dalmatians are born with no spots, and Northern Inuits (a wolf type dog breed) won't get it's true color until at least 3 years old. So you could buy a pale, patchy brown pup and end up with a dark grey dog.

Unless you are really concerned, it may be nothing.

there saliva has an enzyme in it that causes it to turn that color so her eyes are that color due to her tear ducts.. and everywhere else she likes to lick that area a lot ;) and that causes the coloration
