I took my dog to get spayed, what will she be like when she comes home!?

I took my dog to the vet to get spayed , what should I expect when I bring her home? How can I make her feel more comfortable? Thanks!

She will probably be both happy to see you and yet lethargic (tired) when you pick her up to bring her home. I would recommend following the instructions that the vet gives you. Also, I would make sure she has somewhere comfortable to lay (soft blanket etc), and try not to let her jump up too much (like on furniture) until her incision has healed a bit. Keep an eye on the incision, and again follow your vet's instructions.

Here is a link to an article -- scroll down for what to expect post-surgery as well as what to watch for after surgery:

Hope this is helpful. Best of luck!

The vet will give you directions for caring for her. This is a surgery, but if she's in good health it's pretty routine. She will likely be a little sleepy and "dopey" from the anesthesia, this is normal. The vet may have recommendations for helping keep her from chewing at her stitches, and what to watch for as she comes completely out the affects of the anesthesia. I wouldn't worry much. A goo vet will tell you what you need to know and should answer all your questions.

And good for you, getting your dog spayed! =)

I just had my dog spayed last week and it went very well. She moved slow at first and just laied on my lap on the way home . She slept the rest of the night and in the flowing days she started to become her old self, full of it. Just keep her calm as possable and give her a little water the first night and little or no food. After that just a little as she becomes herself everything as normal.

Well your dogs going to feel like anyone who just got surgery. Tired, uncomfortable, and maybe in a little pain. But when you go to the vets you can ask theses questions and they'll give you more information.

To make him more comfortable, just make your dog a nice bed next to you and just chill with him. pet him, be around him. Isn't that what dogs want the most? Put in a movie to entertain yourself and just have a relaxing day.

Ask your vet for some Rimadyl (pain medicine) so she won't be in pain. She will be fine, don't let her run and jump just be easy with her for a week or so and pet her and let her know you love her. When they spend time at the vet getting these things done that cause them to have to stay overnight sometimes, it makes them wonder why you took them there and left them, so just give her extra love during this time and you will both be closer than ever.

She will most likely be sluggish and loopy at first. Let her rest and do not let her run or jump. The vet will give you pain meds, and probably a list of dos and donts. I suggest put her a bed in a quiet comfortable spot and let her sleep. Depending on the dog she should be back to normal in a couple days. My girl is kind of happy go lucky and only 6 months old so she was her normal self the next day, just sore.

She will be very quiet and keep her that way.

Offer a little bit of bland food for this evening and little sips of water.

What I normally do for food is offer a tiny amount every half hour to an hour otherwise they can be sick. Just a couple of mouthfuls, and the same with water.

Then keep her quiet for the next week taking her for walks in the garden for her wee's and poos and no running around. This is quite a major op and I think I see more complications with this one than any other so just keep her as calm as possible.

I remember my female being down for about two days. It was quite comical and sad at the same time. She was really tired and all she did was sleep, go outside, come in, eat, sleep, repeat. Called it Doggy Downers.

Just keep her in a nice quite room. A cage would be better. She needs a minimum of a week to heal before she should be allowed to play. The vet will give you a care sheet and tell you want to expect and what to look out for.

Well, a bit of her "underside" will be shaved as that's where they had to.. you know.. do it. Don't worry, the fur will grow back. She might walk around looking frightened and putting her tail between her legs, so just be comforting to her and don't raise your voice too often. Make sure her bed is nice and soft, too.

That's about as much as I can give you. Hope your dog is fine!

she might be groggy but honestly my dogs didnt even notice they got fixed and i think thats WORSE because you need to keep them calm. no running, jumping, climbing. outside on a leash to potty then right back inside. they should be giving you pain meds and probably some antibiotics

She will be groggy. She will just want to sleep. Let her. You may have to push her to go outside the first day or so for potty breaks. But she will bounce back quickly.

she might calm down

She'll be grumpy and look like you just beat her wearing the cone. After the cone comes off and her stitches are out she'll be about the same.
