What is the breed of dog for my environment and situation?

I love dogs and I have been doing a lot of research on them for the past few months. I have looked after a dog for a few days as well and I am sure that I know the type of things they need. I really want one for myself, as a pet and I am sure that I will be able to look after it but I have a small problem. I have asthma and even though I am not allergic to all dogs (thankfully) there are some dogs that are not as helpful to me as others. I just wondered what would be the best type of dog for asthmatics. Everyone that I ask says poodles but I don't like them because I found out that they shed a lot of hair. I want a small, short haired dog that is friendly to children and will be happy living in a family environment. If possible, they should be good with other dogs too and not so much money spent on grooming. I am happy taking it out to walks every day. If you have any sugestions, please tell me. It would be really apperciated.

Not all Labradoodles don't cast! Like all cross breeds they come in different shapes and forms and have different traits! Some may not shed but others do that's why it's best to stick with a pedigree. Why not spend some time going around the dog shows, there are lots just now, try and get to a Championship show and talk to the owners and breeders. Most people at shows are more than happy to talk about there breed but don't try to talk to them while they are being judged or watching there breed being judged, they may not give you their full attention. Go along to the benches preferably before judging starts and chat to as many different people as you can.

Take your time and you'll have a great time with your chosen breed.

i have a great dane in the philippines

not sure where you got that information...but poodles do not shed hair - they have a wool coat - thats the beauty of them. bichon frise is also a dog that doesnt lose hair - so i suggest that this type of dog would be better for you with your condition.

a jack russell

get a cavoodle, they are bred to be low to non shedding dogs, they are really cute, small and are the friendliest dogs that i have ever had the pleasure of wanting one

well, im asthmatic too but i had and have no problem with my dogs!!

i dont like poodles either because of their hair loss.theres a dog breed i love, its jack russel.the one that plays in the same movie with jim carey in the mask.its small but short haired....

i suffer from allergic asthma too. i got a bichon frise. hes a darling. and i am not at all allergic to him. he doesnt shed. hes cuter than a poodle and yaps less. hes friendly, energetic, - check the bichon out on google. i am so glad i got mine, hes great company.

they only grow to 11 - 13 inches at shoulder height. if you brush them daily they wont get matted coats. i have mine cut every 7-8 weeks as i like him on short side.

other dogs suitable are shi tzus, schnaussers ( minature if you want small)

expect to pay a lot for these those. they arent cheap pooches.

there is a bichon frise rescue on the web. good luck.

Let me repair a little damage done in previous answers....

ALL DOGS SHED HAIR (even Mexican hairless)

Generally short hair isn't seen as prominently so it isn't noticed. I have had virtually every AKC recognized breed in my home at one time or another.

I'm going to make my suggestions based on you having kids.

Depending on how small you are looking, and how much training experience you have (I'm guessing little to none) here are a few thoughts.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (if you read that they require grooming, remember the books are written to "show standards", their easy)

Shiba Inu (Short hair, great with kids, readily trainable, good guard dog.... but tougher to find)

Dachshund (great personalities, and just funny to watch)

Beagle (can't say anything bad about them... just be care full, they tend to put their nose to the ground and follow it.... till they disappeared)

Avoid most "toy" breeds (they tend to be nipish) Unless you have more training experience than I think you do... avoid terriers, with the right training they are great, but without a firm hand and some experience they tend to take over a house.

well a Yorkie, doesn't shed hair but you do have a lot of grooming because their hair can grow long. I'm not sure on how they would affect your asthma.

Chinese Crested's and Xolo's are great for allergies. Both are a hairless breed. The Chinese Crested comes in a breed with hair and they shed very little and are also said to be great for people with asthsma and allergies.

They do require alot of attention and care for their skin though. Your best bet would probably to spend some time with the Dog you choose to get, before taking it home. Just to ensure that you are not going to have adverse reactions to the dog.

A pug!!!! They are great, smooth coat, adorable dogs!!

Good luck!

labradoodles are great dogs for people with allergies. They are a cross between an lab and a poodle.

Check out Tibetan Terriers, they don't cast hair and make great pets.

I also suffer asthma and have Borzoi Wolf hound and have no problems, but I would suggest a Whippet they are adorable low maintenance and quite, my little rescue is a sweetheart. Good luck I am sure you will make a good owner.

There are different breeds that are good for asthmatics. The poodle is one but you do have to be willing to brush them and keep them groomed. The poodle is good because their hair does not fall out.It has to be brushed so it doesn't get all matted. It is not so much the hair as the dander that affects you. The Chihuahua is another favorite but it is supposed to take the asthma from you and will eventually die with it. All dogs don't go good with little kids so please consider this. They all need lots of attention and any one can be costly.

Huskies don't shed & are probably good for asthma, they aren't the easiest breed to care for though.

I'm pretty sure Yorkshire Trerriers are non-allergenic. Ours does not shed. Her coat needs some trimming occasionally. But we do it ourselves. They are very cute with long flowing hair.

For a lot of online dog information, go to wikipedia.

any kind of poodle mix may or may not be hypo-allergenic. Yorkies and maltese are another two. and I thought that poodles shed very little? you may want to check up on that just to make sure b/c that's why they're supposed to be hypo-allergenic.

I don't think poodles do shed, that's why they are recommended to people with asthma. Border Terriers seem to be nice little dogs, that I'm told are good with children. They have a course wiry coat.

Best advice is to get yourself a book from the library about dogs which shows pictures of various breeds and gives a write up about them. Draw up a short list of the dogs that you like the look of and then contact the Kennel Club, who will put you in touch of breeders so tha who you can ask about the breeds that you like.

consider a pug?

I would look into a Ladradoodle, a cross between a Labrador and a poodle.

They have the personality and traits of a Labrador and fur of as poodle.

They were bred for people with allergies and are wonderful pets.

They may be quite expensive though.

There are several breeds that would be good in your environment.

Whippet, Italian Greyhound, Min Pin, Jack Russell, etc....

These are all low maintenance dogs as far as grooming and shedding.

But, as far as being good with other dogs and children as well as people, that will depend on you and how much you socialize it to these conditions. It must be subjected to these conditions in a calm situation for them to become acclimated.

Good luck and remember that the decision is up to you and what you like best.

Pug or Boston Terrier

Jack Russells are great family pets as they don't stick to any particular person (AKA they share their love) they are small dogs and don't need to be groomed because they have very short hair, they are small dogs with a big personality, which means they are not scared of bigger dogs or other dogs but are very friendly towards them. I know for a fact that they do not affect asthmatics because i used to have a quite severe case of it and was fine with my friends jack russell.

i also have asthma as well as a terrier/beagle mix, aussie shepherd mix, 2 lab/rottweiler/dalmation mixes, and a chihuahua....since i'm not allergic to dogs, i have yet to find a dog that aggravates my asthma....

so let's see...dogs with short hair that don't need lots of grooming....labs (probably the most popular), rottweilers, cattle dogs, great danes, chihuahuas, bulldog, whippet, greyhound, italian greyhound, dalmation, dachshund...
